A woman from Murang’a county is seeking help to raise KSh 183,860 to pay off a hospital bill and have her grandchildren discharged.

“These children were born prematurely and had to stay in the nursery for a few months after their mum died. We were only able to be discharged then because someone waived the bill, but because they are sickly, every time I bring them back, the entire amount is added onto my bill,” stated the devastated woman.
Why Ann has not used SHA to pay hospital bill
She also explained that she had just registered for SHA under her daughter Judy Wambui’s name when she was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and could not pay the hospital bills at that time.

Ann said the twins fell sick and were admitted to Thika Level Five Hospital on Thursday, March 27, after being diagnosed with bronchopneumonia.
They were supposed to be discharged on Thursday, April 3, but when she tried to use the Social Health Authority (SHA), she was told the cover was invalid.
"The bill from last year was KSh 83,200 for twin one and KSh 81,600 for twin two, and for the past seven days, I am required to pay KSh 19,060," she shared.
The distressed grandmother said she had been using her daughter’s SHA cover for the kids and had been paying the premiums monthly.
“They told me SHA cannot pay the bills because the twins’ deceased mum had been removed from the system. I did not know it would be a problem because I have been paying for it,” she noted.
Ann also mentioned that she had used the insurance cover before to pay the infant twins’ hospital bills and did not think it would be an issue.

The twins' mum passed away on July 26, 2024, after giving birth to the twins via caesarean section.
Wambui had experienced complications while six months pregnant, prompting doctors to deliver the babies prematurely.
As such, Ann, who also has three other children to care for, said the financial burden was already too much to bear.
“I have my children who are in school, I am a single mum, and now I have my grandkids as an addition to the family. They need supplements to ensure they grow healthily because they were born prematurely. I need help as I wait to sort the issue with SHA,” she said.
Can Ann Maina use her daughter’s SHA account?
spoke to an SHA official who explained the reason for Ann’s predicament.
She noted that the account under Judy’s name had several questionable details concerning the children covered under her insurance.
She explained that the system uses artificial intelligence to deduce the information provided, adding that Ann needed to physically visit the nearest SHA office for help.
“Since she is in Thika, tell her to visit our SHA office there and request to speak to the quality assurance officer. She should carry her daughter’s death certificate and her grandchildren’s birth certificates as she will be asked to produce them for verification,” explained the SHA official.
The official also assured that the children could still be covered under their deceased mum’s insurance, as her full cover shows in the system and will expire in December 2025.
“She will be assisted at the office, and she will have to register her own account and have the twins covered because their mum is already deceased. She will also have to change the phone number to hers for verification purposes so that she can use Judy’s cover for now,” she said.
