Musalia Mudavadi Denies Reports He's Leaving UDA: "Firmly In Government"

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has dismissed claims linking him to a new political party, reaffirming his commitment to the Kenya Kwanza Alliance government.

In a statement released on Sunday, April 6, Mudavadi expressed concern over reports circulating in some media outlets suggesting he was associated with a new political formation.

Is Musalia Mudavadi leaving Kenya Kwanza coalition?

He clarified that he remains firmly rooted in the Kenya Kwanza Alliance administration led by President William Ruto.

"For the avoidance of doubt, Mudavadi is fully aligned with the Kenya Kwanza government and has no intention of joining another political outfit," a statement from the director of his press office, Jacob Ng'etich, read in part.

Before his appointment to government, Mudavadi was the party leader of the Amani National Congress (ANC), which joined hands with Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and other parties to form the Kenya Kwanza Alliance ahead of the 2022 General Election. The ANC and UDA officially merged in January 2025.

The prime Cabinet secretary emphasised that the merger was a voluntary and democratic decision endorsed by party members and highlighted his lifelong commitment to integrity, honesty, and unity in political leadership.

"Throughout his political life, Mudavadi has maintained integrity, honesty, and dignity in his way of doing things and has never had a double face. He remains committed to serving the people of Kenya and upholding the values of unity and cohesion within the ruling coalition,” the statement added.

His former ANC allies, the statement noted, now occupy senior positions in the ruling party, including the deputy party leader role, and continue to play a significant role in the governance structure.

Following the merger, some ANC leaders opposed the move, accusing Mudavadi of making key decisions without consulting them and vowing to distance themselves from it.

Meanwhile, the reports claimed that his allies formed the Umoja Summit Party (USP) shortly after ANC was dissolved, amid reports suggesting they had Mudavadi’s blessing.

Will Ruto win the 2027 General Election?

Meanwhile, speaking during the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations in Malindi, Mudavadi dismissed the likelihood of Ruto being defeated in the 2027 General Election.

He pointed to the recent Memorandum of Understanding between Ruto and Raila Odinga’s ODM party as a strong political alliance.

Mudavadi questioned how the opposition, including Gen Zs and impeached deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, could overcome a united front led by Ruto and Raila.
