The deceased, identified as Boaz Zachary, a Third-Year Bachelor of Arts student, was reportedly attacked on the night of Thursday, April 3, before his lifeless body was found dumped along a deserted road.

His shocking murder sparked mass demonstrations, with students accusing authorities of failing to deal with insecurity in the area.

Furious students barricaded the Kisumu-Busia Highway with boulders and tree branches, leading to heavy traffic disruptions.

Riot police from Maseno Police Station were deployed to quell the unrest, resulting in running battles between law enforcement officers and students.

The protesters demanded immediate action from security agencies, citing rising insecurity around the university and its environs.

Boaz Zachary's final moments

According to fellow students, Boaz, who also worked as a boda boda rider to support himself, was last seen carrying a passenger towards the Trinity area at night.

This was the last time he was seen alive, as hours later in the morning, his body was discovered with severe head injuries, with some students alleging he had also been strangled.

The Student Organisation of Maseno University (SOMU) has strongly condemned the killing and vowed to push for justice.

"Comrades countrywide are saddened by the brutal murder of Boaz Zachary, a Third-Year student. I condemn the brutal and senseless murder of the student. It’s unacceptable that such a crime can occur within the university without swift intervention from law enforcement," SOMU President Benjamin Anditi told TUKO.co.ke.

He further warned that students would not hesitate to take further lawful measures if authorities failed to act decisively.

"Let this be a warning: if no decisive action is taken, we will not hesitate to take lawful measures to ensure justice for Boaz," Anditi added.

Missing Maseno University student found dead

Boaz’s passing follows the recent tragic death of 20-year-old Julias Kamanja Kiago, a First-Year student at the same university.

Kamanja’s body was discovered near the water treatment area behind RAMs hostels, days after he was reported missing on Saturday, March 15.

Maseno University’s Director of Public Relations, Owen McOnyango, stated that the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, prompting authorities to launch an investigation.

According to McOnyango, Kamanja, a student in the School of Mathematics and Computer Science, had left his hostel without his phone or laptop, reportedly to buy lunch.

He was described as unstable and had been referred for psychotherapy by the university.
